Reflections

Martin Luther King Jr. Day has come and gone and it was a nice pause in hectic schedules for reflection. The thing that strikes me most is how libraries have been in the forefront of equal opportunity. Think about it. A public building filled with books - free to check out. Even if you don't have a library card, books, magazines and newspapers are free to enjoy while sitting in air-conditioned or heated comfort. This magical place is open to any member of immediate and surrounding communities. You don't even have to be a citizen to enjoy the library. As an institution it is welcoming to all the diversity life has to offer. And other than the stern shush for quiet or sotto-voce request food be put away, libraries are quite laissez-faire over differing tastes in reading and information requests. Democracy in action and practiced every day. Join us.

So, the new year is here and the short breather everyone took for the holidays is over. The Library is starting the year off with more programs for jobs, health and relaxation. This Saturday is an all day job-event, with workshops on everything from filing for unemployment, looking for jobs, polishing your resume and surviving interviews. Barely a break and on January 17, there's a Brown Bag on anti-oxidants. Should you think that's not enough, there are movies later in the month. An Oasis in Holiday Madness

Holidays can get a bit frenetic, and the Library becomes an oasis of serenity from traffic, shopping malls, and other distractions for our community.

That doesn't mean librarians aren't seriously busy. Musical programs and movies, visits with Santa, students jamming study rooms to cram for finals, and proctored tests stacked three-deep make up a full day. That's on top of normal computer assistance and great reference questions. And new book arrivals don't stop for the holidays. Processing new books takes on renewed vigor so people have great reads over the days the library is closed.

Speaking of closed, our doors are locked for Saturday, Sunday and Monday, December 24, 25, 26. Likewise for New Year weekend, December 31, January 1 & 2.

So relax in one of our big chairs, unwind from hectic gatherings and mega-shopping, and spend some time with us in the Library. You'll be glad you did.

One thing the big wind taught us: there's a back door to almost everything. While the power was off City-wide, it was hard to access our website and impossible to get to our 24/7 online resources. That's where this very blog came in handy! To the left of the posts is a list of our 24/7 resources and the links worked. So if you find yourself in another catastrophe, and for some reason need access to our online stuff, it's just a click away.

Even fierce winds can't keep a good library down

For those of us who lived through the howling winds, watched huge trees topple onto houses, cars and streets, and generally hoped we would all be safe in the morning, the still clear air today is a welcome relief. Monrovia rose to the occasion with a well-orchestrated emergency plan which included librarians fielding calls from concerned citizens and acting as liaisons with other emergency personnel.

The library not surprisingly lost power on Thursday and had to close down for the rest of the week. Happily, we were up to business as usual on Monday morning.

Sadly, three Library Park trees lost the battle with gusts that reached 97 mph. The recently decorated Christmas Tree at the corner of Palm and Myrtle toppled completely. Fortunately, the venerable Moreton Bay Fig was untouched and still stands proudly watching over the Park.

Though some still lack power, and everyone has their own story to tell, life is getting back to normal rapidly, though the clean-up of the aftermath will continue for some time.

From all of us at the Library to all of you out there, keep it safe and sane.

Up to just recently, we've offered computer classes for beginners, which has been rewarding in many ways. The time has come to open up to a wider audience of experts - you - who might want to share ideas, tips, and tricks for using technology in today's fast-paced, gadget-loaded world.

Ninety-Nines Take to the Skies

Everybody Needs Friends

Friends are great to have. They help you during bad times and share the good times. Having strong, dedicated friends is a joy indeed.

Libraries are no exception. Many community members believe their tax dollars fully support their local libraries. The truth is that roughly 3¢ - 7¢ of every community tax dollar goes to the library. That doesn't go very far. In order to loan free books and ensure computer access, to create special collections and provide incredible programming for everyone from infants to Seniors, it takes money. Libraries depend upon grants, State funding sources, bequests and donations to maintain the level of service most communities have come to expect.

This is where Friends of the Monrovia Public Library have stepped up in a big way. An active Board and super-active volunteer force staff the Friends Store, selling donated books, bags, postcards and other memorabilia. Twice a year, they have a huge book sale with their famous 2-bucks-per-bag sale in the last couple of hours for super bargains. They have even gone online to generate income. They act as goodwill ambassadors. Without our good Friends, the library couldn't offer many of our programs, the microfilm scanner station would still be on the wish list, and our book budget would be a shadow of its former self.

A heartfelt thank you to our special Friends of the Monrovia Public Library during Friends of the Library week.

Steps to Employment

This timely workshop teaches how to file an online unemployment application, create electronic resumes and access a multitude of free resources for job hunters.

A demonstration of the Library’s new Career Transitions resource walks users through the entire job search process. An added bonus - a representative from either Economic Development Department or LA Works will attend to answer questions and give helpful advice.

Lions and tigers and blue bears, oh my!

Well, we have a bear at least. To celebrate Monrovia's 125th birthday, the City honored Samson the Hot Tub Bear. If you happen to see a colorfully decorated bear outside a business or in an unexpected public place, don't be surprised.

By far the best bear is titled Bearlovian Paradise, the creation of Lynne Fearman, the artist charged with task of transforming a plain Samson into a true work of art at the request of Friends of the Monrovia Public Library. Ms. Fearman chose to include a jungle of plants and animals. Since the bear is displayed in the Library's Youth Services area in the round, all the creatures, great and small, are easily found.

Come enjoy this blue bear wonder yourself.

Chinese Cooking with Chef Theresa Lin

New toys...I mean tools at the Library

From clunky, old and cranky to....

sleek, compact and nice features....

We have the most supportive Friends organization ever. We had been struggling with an old, cranky microfilm machine whose sole output was scratchy views of old newspapers or building permits, and whose printer was so finicky, librarians spent more time on their knees jiggling this and that to get it to print than it actually printed out. Librarians and library patrons alike were frustrated. We began to regard it as a rather bulky paperweight.

Friends of Monrovia Public Library to the rescue. Not only did they hear our plea for new equipment, they were willing to think futuristically to the newest type of microfilm reader made. Then they went a step farther and made sure we were are able to purchase what amounts to an entire scanner/reader station, complete with large format monitor, high-powered computer, large format printer and other assorted bells and whistles.

Say you're looking for an old newspaper article from 1952. Our ScanPro 2000 not only lets you view an entire newspaper page on the 30" portrait monitor, it allows you to print the entire page. You'd rather email it to yourself or a friend you say? Fine - just scan the page, save it to our desktop folder or your own flash drive, open your email, attach it and hit send.

Don't need an entire page? No problem. Crop the article you want and scan, print or email only that portion.
Need to enlarge the text or a picture? Magnify it. The view is too light or too dark? Adjusting brightness or contrast is a breeze. Paper looks crooked on the page? Straighten it. Rotate it. Spin it in a complete circle if that's how you want to spend your time.

Now, while all the playing around with the scanner is fun, it does mean coming into the library to use the equipment. So yes, we've thought of that too. And so, digitizing the collection, posting it online, and allowing public access to these items remotely is already underway.

The best part of all this? The scanner itself is so small it fits tidily on the reference desk. The light in it is green power - energy efficient and never gets hot (heat damages film).

So all of you who have been putting off investigating your house or your grand-nephew's uncle's cousin 10 times removed because the equipment was so bad, rejoice. The Library is once again on your side.

Latino Heritage and Pio Pico - a very special author event

Author Carolos Manuel Salomon discusses his biography of the two-time governor of Alta Mexico, Pio Pico, who fought in vain to save his territory from being annexed by the United States.

Dr. Salomon is an assistant professor of Ethnic Studies and director of the Latin American Studies Program at California State University, East Bay.

What's the difference between a dragon and a lizard?

Size of course! In this case, Amadeus, a beautiful bearded dragon, (say that 5 times fast), may look like a lizard. And he is, sort of. He's two years old, and if he isn't walking on the ceiling of his habitat, he's hanging out on the warm rocks below. His guardian likes to take him out to hold him, but Amadeus prefers to get a bird's eye view by climbing up on his shoulder instead.

It's not every library that can claim it has dragons - except in books.

Lori Moreno, Employment Training Specialist with L.A. Works*, speaks about a new program that reimburses businesses for training newly hired employees.

With the recent downturn in the economy, the State of California was awarded a multi-million dollar grant to assist long-term unemployed find employment.

The primary objective of the grant helps businesses reduce the cost of training new employees. The secondary objective assists dislocated workers who need additional training to transition to a new industry.

Have more fun this summer with our Novel Destinations three -part craft series. All materials for the projects are provided for this free series.

June 15: Make and take paper flowers from Mexico. Learn how to turn tissue and crepe paper into beautiful flowers which can be used to decorate for any occasion.

July 13: Make a small coiled basket inspired by Africa. Baskets can be made from a variety of materials. Learn this easy and useful craft.

July 27: Sailors in the English Royal Navy spent many hours knotting useful objects to pass the time at sea. Try your hand at making a small macramé owl or a project of your own design.

These Wednesday craft sessions feature an instructor to demonstrate and help you get started on your project. Drop-in the Teen Area anytime between 11:00 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.

Boss is barely out of puppyhood and has lived with his guardians for 9 months. He's really energetic, loves to play, run around house for no reason and dig holes all over the place. He appears to be a Husky who is turning into a Malamute - he's outgrowing the range for even a large Husky. Only his mother knows for sure.

He's really smart in terms of getting what he wants. He knows how to shake hands, high five, sit, lay down, and play dead. If someone is holding a treat or toy he really really likes, he'll do all of those moves in rapid succession just to get the stuff ASAP.

Toby is two years and one month old. He plays with balls and tries to catch them like a cat - he pounces instead of the traditional fetch. If his guardians say, "awww," he rolls over on his stomach.

His other big trick is to entice people to rub his belly by being so cute no one can resist. He's also very fashion-forward, wearing only the latest designs in sweaters (but no pants - is that bad?).

Toby is the perfect example that great things come in small packages. What's not to love?

On May 7^th, we offered a full day of workshops devoted to job search, resume, and interview skills at the library. Due to the positive feedback from those who attended, we will announce an upcoming day of workshops in the fall. Our business reference librarian, Jeff provided a list of great resources and links of the various job search sites and their uses.

A question was asked about whether there were any resources available for ex-offenders to return to the workforce. Have you heard of Riley Guide? “It is primarily intended to provide instruction for job seekers on how to use the Internet to their best advantage, but recruiters and other career service industry professional will find information here to help them also.”

Interestingly, you can also find resources for ex-offenders who are looking to return to the workforce.

Staff Pet - Flirtin' Floyd

Floyd is a 6 1/2 year old rescue who has lived with his guardians for almost 3 years. A bit of a flirt, he is generous with his kisses and loves a good conversation - especially if it accompanied with petting him. He knows he's handsome, but tries not to let that go to his head.

His favorite games are chasing his plushy toys around the yard and flushing out squirrels, lizards and other animals on walks. He recently discovered chickens when about 10 of them were wandering around the neighborhood (another story) and thinks they are pretty swell.

Hi! I'm Darvy, a 5 year old Cocker Spaniel. I've been with my guardian for about two years, after a friend of hers couldn't keep me any longer. I am so lucky! My guardian loves me and when she pulls up to the gate, I'm right there to ask about her day. I allow her give me belly rubs any time she wants to - especially when I get in front of her belly up.

My guardian has spoken to me about my barking habit and I do my best. But after all, I have a job to do defending our territory from squirrels and birds, so the whole barking thing is not going to be resolved soon.

Quincy is only one. He followed his guardians home while they were out walking their other dog. They bowed to the inevitable (how could they not with such a cute little guy) and made him part of the family. He likes chewing on Java’s ears, chasing balls, and sitting in laps. He hates being alone.

Java is 12 and generally likes taking long naps after a good run. His other big hobby is burying bones in the backyard. He is fairly indulgent with Quincy as he chews on his ears and generally keeps things lively. Pet peeves? Mail carriers and lawn mowers.

As a discerning library aficionado, I've allowed my librarian guardian to care for me since I was 8 weeks old. I'm now a very sleek 8 years old, and friends and family may call me Liono. I just ignore strangers.

I'm very good at playing fetch, but not very good at actually returning the stuffed mice. I'm also a great acrobat.

My favorite thing to do for my doting family is to rise very early, stretch, and then practice my singing until my guardians awaken. They claim it's screeching. Come over and you be the judge.

Staff Pet #1: Dee Dee came from Golden Retriever rescue in April, 2007, though Dee Dee isn't a purebred. She's part Golden, part Australian Shepherd and maybe a bit of Border Collie. She's got to be the smartest dog ever. (You hear that a lot from pet guardians, but in this case, well, it's true). She likes herding and protecting the house from anyone or anything that goes by the fence. Her two real loves: her tennis ball and Dad. Every morning she'll herd Dad out of the shower until she gets her walk. Every night she demands, and gets, tennis ball play time. Her favorite book? Why Tennis Balls for Dummies of course.

Looking & Patience

For most beginners, a panic response often sets in when they are trying to do something and it isn't immediately apparent. Usually the problem is simply a matter of taking a deep breath and a close look at the screen. Sometimes there is so much visual noise on a web page it's hard to locate the button or link you are searching for. Just slow down, start in one corner, and slowly scan the screen. Though it may not jump out at you, what you are looking for is usually there. Take the Log Off link for example. It seems email companies no longer want you to sign out of accounts. They often make the sign out/log off link so small, or in an odd place, it takes a bit of searching to find it. But it IS there if you look hard enough. Patience is a virtue. We've all heard that saying, yet we seem to ignore it when it comes to computers. Have the patience with yourself - after all, you didn't learn to walk in one day. Why should you think you'll learn how to use a computer well in one day? Don't be afraid to press buttons just to see what happens. And don't forget to LOOK, truly look at the monitor.

Pigs in Library Park

Many libraries are famous for their library cats or read-to-a-dog programs, but how many can boast a library pig? Sweet Pea visits Library Park almost daily with her guardian, a local attorney. She responds mostly to being fed cereal, and squeals protests loudly when she has to leave the Park for the day. Okay, so she can't curl up on a book shelf or provide cuddly comfort to kids learning to read, but she provides endless smiles when she comes out for her walk.

Searching for Topics with Online Resources – The Civil War and Emerging Women’s Rights

April's display on the Civil War addresses an important part of America's political and military history. It also marks a time when Americans were becoming socially conscious about the rights of human beings. In the years leading up to the Civil War, prominent abolitionists who challenged slavery, including Frederick Douglass and Sojourner Truth, also began asking questions about the rights of women.

While Ken Burns was working on his now famous Civil War documentary, his interest in this time period resulted in Not For Ourselves Alone, which was on display for Women's History Month in March and is based on the lives of Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton, who headed the first women's rights convention at Seneca Falls in 1848. A search on Seneca Falls in the library's catalog reveals that the historical convention also made its way into fiction via a mystery novel called Through A Gold Eagle: a Glynis Tryon mystery by Miriam Grace Monfred.

To search for the most recent information on historical topics, you can go to the Gale Infotrac General Reference Center Gold on the library's blog or online resources page. After you enter your library card number, the page will go to “Browse Subjects.” If, for example, you then typed “Seneca Falls,” a recent search would bring up three subject terms, and by clicking on “Seneca Falls, New York” you would have access to 29 articles.

A recent search turned up a decade old article about the 1848 convention for a children's magazine called Cobblestone, and several abstracts of articles in Ms. For the abstract of “What really happened at Seneca Falls” in a 1998 issue of Ms., “Related Subjects” provided a list of helpful topics on the left side of the screen, including 299 matches for Abolitionists and 91 matches for Elizabeth Cady Stanton. Matches for Stanton turned up an article in the Spring 2009 issue of National Parks, which included photographs, details about a historic chapel that had been converted into a laundromat, and the author's revelation that her grandmother had been a civil engineer who actually lived with Stanton for a short time.

A basic search for Sojourner Truth, the abolitionist and suffragist who made her famous “Ain't I A Woman?” speech to the Ohio Women's Rights convention in 1851, turned up the most recent article as: “Sojourner Truth: Childhood and Youth” in the November and December 2010 issue of Skipping Stones. The story included beautiful color drawings of Truth's life by 3rd and 4th graders who live in the part of New York where she was born and raised.

One of the great things about using the library's resources is that they give you a way to dig deeper into history. Another good reason is to find proof that many different kinds of stories, including ones that may not have made it into some textbooks in the past, are now being honored by the next generations.

Dr. Reyna reads from her new book The Heavens Weep for Us and Other Stories. The collection of 12 stories deals with losses we all experience and how we bravely reinvent ourselves to give meaning to life in the face of hardship.

Writing for over 30 years, she has been published in a variety of journals, textbooks and other media. Heavens was a finalist for the National Best Books Awards.

A former public school teacher and administrator in Pasadena and South Pasadena, Dr. Reyna currently teaches in the graduate education program at California State University, Los Angeles.
