Denise Harvey from Monrovia Travel gets together with friends who perform while giving sound advice on making your trip safe, easy and smooth.

Global Etiquette: Practicing international courtesy and learning the customs of places you visit save you from awkward situations. Ms. Harvey and friends perform skits and role-play to avert blunders when visiting abroad. Taste delicious treats from foreign lands at the end of the program.

A Don't - Miss Event

This Saturday is the first in our summer series of travel programs. Denise Harvey of Monrovia Travel and her friends have entertaining ways to talk about travel. Doors to the Library Community Room open at 10:00 a.m. for a talk and performance about understanding customs in places you visit to avoid awkward situations.

At the end of the program, one lucky participant will have a chance to spin our prize wheel for a gift and everybody will sample tasty treats from foreign lands.

Brown Bag Workshop for On-the-Job Training Grant

Bring your lunch and learn....

On Wed. June 29th from 11:30 am to 1:00 pm, in the Community Room,

Lori Moreno, Employment Training Specialist with L.A. Works*, speaks about a new program that reimburses businesses for training newly hired employees.

With the recent downturn in the economy, the State of California was awarded a multi-million dollar grant to assist long-term unemployed find employment.

The primary objective of the grant helps businesses reduce the cost of training new employees. The secondary objective assists dislocated workers who need additional training to transition to a new industry.

*L.A Works is a One-Stop Workforce Development Partnership in Irwindale.

If you have a passion for books and enjoy discussing them with others, please join our newly forming Book Club. Help guide the Club during the first organizational meeting. Please have at least 2 book selections in mind for the meeting, as books will be selected solely on members' suggestions. The Book Club will meet once a month for lively discussion, sharing ideas, and making new friends.

Make & Take Paper Flowers from Mexico

It's hard to believe the flowers in the bouquet are made of paper, but each flower is a dream concoction of tissue and crepe paper. An instructor demonstrates and helps you get started on your own flowers. All materials provided so all you have to do is drop in to the Teen Area and have fun. Wednesday, June 15, between 11:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. FREE.

Novel Destinations Craft Series

Have more fun this summer with our Novel Destinations three -part craft series. All materials for the projects are provided for this free series.

June 15: Make and take paper flowers from Mexico. Learn how to turn tissue and crepe paper into beautiful flowers which can be used to decorate for any occasion.

July 13: Make a small coiled basket inspired by Africa. Baskets can be made from a variety of materials. Learn this easy and useful craft.

July 27: Sailors in the English Royal Navy spent many hours knotting useful objects to pass the time at sea. Try your hand at making a small macramé owl or a project of your own design.

These Wednesday craft sessions feature an instructor to demonstrate and help you get started on your project. Drop-in the Teen Area anytime between 11:00 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.

Volunteer Staff Pet: You're Not My Boss...Oh Wait

Boss is barely out of puppyhood and has lived with his guardians for 9 months. He's really energetic, loves to play, run around house for no reason and dig holes all over the place. He appears to be a Husky who is turning into a Malamute - he's outgrowing the range for even a large Husky. Only his mother knows for sure.

He's really smart in terms of getting what he wants. He knows how to shake hands, high five, sit, lay down, and play dead. If someone is holding a treat or toy he really really likes, he'll do all of those moves in rapid succession just to get the stuff ASAP.

Staff Pet - Great Things Come in Small Packages

Toby is two years and one month old. He plays with balls and tries to catch them like a cat - he pounces instead of the traditional fetch. If his guardians say, "awww," he rolls over on his stomach.

His other big trick is to entice people to rub his belly by being so cute no one can resist. He's also very fashion-forward, wearing only the latest designs in sweaters (but no pants - is that bad?).

Toby is the perfect example that great things come in small packages. What's not to love?
